The Partner-Ring

24th Edition, November 2006

Cloud Callout: STOP PRESS!
Thanks to those of you who made the effort to attend the Open Board Meeting on the 7th.  This was a BIG meeting for BIG decisions.  The main issue discussed was the future of the Partnership and its projects.  For a detailed report on the meeting please see the attached minutes, otherwise youíll find a summary of the key decisions made below:
  • As of next year, the iN office will be reduced to basic communication functions such as the Partner Ring and the Website.  Suzanne will continue to man the office as needed and check the emails, so please keep in contact!
  • The Board will be reduced to a combined Exco and Board with three/four members who could meet once a quarter as an open meeting.  Mass meetings could be called for new developments.
  • Exco will meet in the new year to discuss the possibility of subletting the LOP facilitatorís training and the fundraising coursed to appropriate, interested Partners
  • Other manuals will be placed on the website as resources for Partners

PROTEC forwarded the following letter for the attention of Partners:

Dear friends,

You are probably aware of the annual SASOL SciFest which has been taking place in  Grahamstown for a number of years.  There has

also been a similar science education week in Pretoria for the past two years.

It was recently announced that in 2007 KZN will be getting its own science education week, to be called KZN ScienceUnlimited 2007, at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg.

This educational happening will be of enormous importance, yet very few local organisations and schools seem to be aware of, or excited about, the planned event, or of its educational, scientific and community significance.

Dr Richard Chernis, who set up the Grahamstown SciFest, and who will be the programme director for KZN ScienceUnlimited 2007, will be in town later in November, and it is important that he meets with as many educational stakeholders as possible.

The KZN ScienceUnlimited Week will be from 27 to 31 August 2007.  Please IGNORE any and all other dates which have been circulated.  These are now the correct and official dates.

Details of the information meeting at which Dr Chernis will speak are as follows:

Date:  Tuesday 21 November 2006
Venue:  Functions Room, Ground Floor, Chamber House, Royal Showgrounds, Pietermaritzburg
Time:  1.30pm for 2pm - 3.00pm
Tea and coffee will be served (no lunch!)
  1. If possible, come to the meeting to hear about this important educational happening
  2. Include the dates of 27 to 31 August 2007 in your organisation's planning for 2007
  3. Visit
  4. Forward this email to others who you think will be interested
  5. Tell others about KZN ScienceUnlimited 2007

I look forward to seeing you at Chamber House on Tuesday 21 November.

Best wishes as always,

Lloyd Smuts
